Newton County is located in the eastern part of Texas and was established on April 22, 1846, when it separated from Jasper County. It was named in honor of John Newton, a veteran of the American Revolution. The county seat is the city of Newton, which was founded in 1855.

In its early days, the economy of Newton County relied heavily on agriculture, primarily cotton farming, along with lumber and logging industries due to the vast pine forests in the area. This helped in the establishment of small communities throughout the county.

By the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the population grew as the timber and railway industries expanded in the region. The economic development of Newton County shifted more towards logging, with sawmills and related industries playing a significant role in the area's financial growth. With the decline of the timber industry in the later parts of the 20th century, the population has gradually decreased.

A fun fact about Newton County is that it is home to the beautiful Toledo Bend Reservoir, which it shares with Louisiana. The reservoir, formed by the damming of the Sabine River, covers an area of about 185,000 acres and is popular for its recreational activities, including fishing, boating, and camping. The reservoir is also known for its largemouth bass fishing opportunities, attracting anglers from all over the country.
