Ochiltree County, located in the northernmost part of the Texas Panhandle, was created from the Bexar District and organized in 1876. Its county seat is Perryton. The county was named in honor of William Beck Ochiltree, a prominent Texas lawyer, legislator, and officer in the Confederate States Army.

In the early years of its history, the region was mainly inhabited by the Comanche and other indigenous tribes that hunted bison. The Anglo-American presence began to grow during the late 19th century. Ranching became the main industry in Ochiltree County in the early 1880s, with large ranches forming the backbone of the local economy. The organized cattle drives from the 1890s to the early 1900s also contributed significantly to the county's growth.

The discovery of oil and gas fields in the 1920s led to a major economic boom in Ochiltree County. By the 1950s, the county had become one of the top oil and gas producers in the state, leading to a population surge and the development of infrastructure and public services.

Agriculture is also a leading industry in the county, with wheat, corn, and grain sorghum being the primary crops. Cattle ranching remains a significant part of the local economy as well.

Fun Fact: The town of Perryton in Ochiltree County is known as the "Wheatheart of the Nation" due to the productive wheat farming in the area, with wheat being a major cash crop for local farmers. Additionally, Perryton is one of the few towns in the county that lies on the pathway of the former Ozark Trail, an early 20th-century network of locally maintained roads and highways that connected St. Louis, Missouri, to El Paso, Texas.
