Presidio County is located in the state of Texas, sharing borders with Mexico and the Rio Grande. Established in 1850 and organized in 1875, the county has a rich historical background. The area was initially inhabited by Native American tribes, such as the Jumano, Chisos, and Mansos. The first European to arrive in the region was Spaniard Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca in the 1530s, followed by other Spanish explorers and settlers over the following centuries.

In the 17th and 18th centuries, the Presidio del Norte (now known as Presidio) was established as a significant Spanish military outpost, which played a vital role in protecting New Spain from Indian attacks and controlling the trade routes along the Rio Grande. In the subsequent years, the area experienced a series of changes as Mexico gained independence from Spain, and then Texas separated from Mexico, eventually joining the United States in 1845.

Presidio County was formed from Bexar County on January 3, 1850. It went through a series of territorial adjustments and was officially organized in 1875. Fort Davis served as the county seat until it was moved to Marfa in 1885. The construction of the Texas and New Orleans Railroad in the late 19th century helped develop Marfa into a bustling town and a center for cattle ranching and farming.

A fun fact about Presidio County is the Marfa Lights phenomenon. Marfa Lights, also known as the Marfa Ghost Lights, are mysterious, glowing orbs that have been reported in the region for over a century, usually around the towns of Marfa and Alpine. The source of the lights is still debated, with some suggesting they are car headlights, atmospheric reflections, or a form of bioluminescence. The phenomenon has been the subject of numerous investigations and generated significant interest, making it a tourist attraction in the area.
