Real County is a rural region situated in the Edwards Plateau of the great state of Texas. Established on April 3, 1913, Real County was formed out of parts of Bandera, Edwards, and Kerr Counties. The county was named in honor of Julius Real, a prominent Texas politician and state senator who strongly advocated for the development of local infrastructure.

The county seat, Leakey, named after Texas Ranger Captain John Leakey, was established in 1883. Leakey and the smaller town of Camp Wood are the two main towns in Real County. The county has a rich history of Spanish explorers, American Indians, European settlers, and cattle ranching.

One fun fact about Real County is its long-standing connection to aviation history. In the 1920s and 1930s, a legendary Texan aviator by the name of Earl McKennon established an aviation training facility in the area, primarily training World War II pilots. Nowadays, an airstrip named in his honor, the McKennon Aviation Foundation, serves the local community and offers aviation history exhibits for interested visitors.

Another intriguing aspect of Real County is its abundant natural beauty. The county is home to the Frio River, which offers pristine water for recreational activities such as swimming, kayaking, and tubing. Additionally, the distinctive geological formations in the region make it ideal for various types of outdoor excursions.
