Red River County is located in the northeastern part of Texas, along the Red River which serves as the border between Texas and Oklahoma. The county was officially formed in 1837, making it one of the oldest counties in Texas. It was named after the Red River that flows along its northern boundary. The county seat is Clarksville.

Before European settlement, the area was inhabited by various Native American tribes, including the Caddo, Wichita, and Comanche. In the early 1800s, French and Spanish expeditions took place in the region, with French explorer Francois-Marie Bissot de Vincennes playing a significant role in mapping the Red River.

In the 1820s, Anglo-American settlers began arriving, with many of them obtaining land grants from the Mexican government as part of empresario contracts. The area witnessed significant growth in the 1830s and played a crucial role during the Texas Revolution. Following Texas' independence, Red River County became a hub for immigration and economic activity.

Throughout its history, Red River County has been primarily an agricultural region, with cotton and corn being some of the main crops. It also played a significant role in regional trade, with steamboats navigating the Red River during the 19th century.

Fun fact: One of the lesser-known but important battles in the Texas Revolution, the Battle of Red River, took place in Red River County. It was fought on February 12, 1836, between a band of volunteers led by Dr. James Grant and a Mexican cavalry company. Although the Mexican forces were victorious, the battle delayed their advance and provided precious time for the Texian forces to prepare for the Battle of the Alamo.
