Roberts County, located in the great state of Texas, is situated in the northeastern part of the Panhandle. It was created in August 1876 by an act of the Texas legislature from lands formerly assigned to the Bexar District and was named in honor of John S. Roberts and Oran Milo Roberts, two early Texas political leaders.

The county's settlement history can be traced back to 1878 when the first ranches were established in the area. However, the population in Roberts County remained thin for years. The arrival of the Chicago, Rock Island and Gulf Railway in 1902 began to spur growth in the county. The town of Miami, which had been founded as a result of the railroad, soon developed as the county's center of commerce and government, and in 1907, it was designated as the county seat.

Throughout the early 20th century, the economy of Roberts County was predominantly based on ranching and agriculture, with cattle raising and wheat farming as the primary industries. The discovery of oil in the late 1950s also contributed to the county's economic boom.

A fun fact about Roberts County is that it has long been one of the least populous counties in the United States. As of the 2020 Census, the population was just 887, making it the second least-populated county in Texas after Loving County. This region is known for its rich ranching heritage, wide-open spaces, and clear skies that make stargazing a popular activity for locals and visitors alike.
