Runnels County, located in the great state of Texas, was officially formed in 1858 and named in honor of Hiram G. Runnels, a Texas state legislator. Situated in central Texas, the county is crossed by the Colorado River, creating fertile lands for farming and agriculture. The county seat is Ballinger, while other towns within the county include Winters, Wingate, and Rowena.

Prior to its formation, the territory that now makes up Runnels County was once inhabited by Native American tribes such as the Comanche, Wichita, and Tonkawa. European explorers and settlers first arrived in the region during the 17th century. However, the establishment of settlements was quite challenging due to the ever-present threat posed by conflicts with the indigenous people.

Following Texas's annexation to the United States in 1845, the area experienced considerable growth, particularly after the construction of the Gulf, Colorado, and Santa Fe Railway. This growth primarily centered around the railroad, and it spurred the development of commercial centers in Ballinger, Winters, and Miles.

Agriculture has always been central to Runnels County's economy, with the cultivation of crops such as cotton, sorghum, wheat, and corn, along with cattle and sheep farming, being critical industries for the region.

A fun fact about Runnels County is that it hosts the annual Runnels County Junior Livestock Show, which showcases the county's rich agricultural heritage. The event includes various competitions that celebrate both the students and the community's commitment to agriculture, and its impact on the local economy.
