San Saba County is located in Central Texas and has a rich historical background. It was named after the San Saba River, which explorer Alonso de Len named in 1689 after the patron saint of the area, San Sabas. The county was formally established on February 1, 1856, and the town of San Saba became the county seat.

Before European settlers arrived, the region was populated by various Native American tribes, including the Tonkawa, Apache, and Comanche. In the early 18th century, Spanish missionaries built the Presidio San Luis de las Amarillas and the Mission Santa Cruz de San Saba to convert the natives to Christianity, but both missions faced resistance; the mission was destroyed in an attack by the Comanche and their allies in 1758.

Anglo-American settlers began moving into the area in the 1830s and 1840s, resulting in frequent conflicts with Native Americans. Fort McKavett, established in 1852, served as a military outpost to protect settlers in the region. The county's population continued to grow throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, driven by the growth of agriculture, specifically cotton, pecans, and livestock farming.

Today, San Saba County is known for its agricultural production and natural beauty, with several parks highlighting the area's environmental resources, such as Colorado Bend State Park and the San Saba River Nature Park.

Fun Fact: The City of San Saba is known as the "Pecan Capital of the World" due to the significant number of pecan trees in the area and its thriving pecan industry, which attracts tourists for pecan-themed events and festivals.
