Shackelford County, located in the great state of Texas, was established in 1858 and organized in 1874. Nestled in central north Texas, it is part of the Edwards Plateau region. The county is named in honor of Dr. Jack Shackelford, a brave physician who served during the Texas Revolution as the leader of the "Red Rovers," a volunteer group.

During its early years, Shackelford County saw little settlement, serving primarily as a vast hunting ground. Due to the availability of quality grazing land, cattle ranching began in the early 1860s and dominated the county's economy throughout the 1800s. The agricultural economy diversified over the years, with cotton, wheat, and sorghum becoming key crops.

The coming of the Texas Central Railway in 1880 significantly boosted the county's development as towns and communities grew around the rail line. The county seat is Albany, established in 1873, the same year a Fort Griffin-to-Fort Richardson military road was constructed. Albany now plays a central role in the county's social, cultural, and economic life.

A fun fact about Shackelford County is that it hosts the annual Fort Griffin Fandangle, Texas's oldest outdoor musical. This event, held every year since 1938, celebrates the county's rich history and heritage, featuring portrayals of frontier life, pioneers, cowboys, and Native Americans.
