Shelby County is located in the eastern part of the great state of Texas. It was established on April 6, 1837, carved out of a larger region known as the Old Municipality of Shelby. The county is named after Isaac Shelby, a legendary soldier and military hero who fought in the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812. Center, the county seat, was established in 1866 under the name of White Cottage but was renamed Center in 1870 because of its location at the geographical center of the county.

Settlement in Shelby County began in the 1820s when families arrived from the United States searching for fertile lands for farming, especially cotton. Shelby County has a rich history, having been under the governance of Spain, Mexico, the Republic of Texas, the Confederate States of America, and, finally, the United States.

The county has a diverse ethnic background, with populations of African Americans, European settlers, and Native Americans all having left their mark on the region's culture and history. Agriculture and timber harvesting have been the backbone of Shelby County's economy since its inception.

One fun fact about Shelby County is that it's home to the annual East Texas Poultry Festival, held in Center, which celebrates the local poultry industry with live entertainment, arts and crafts, and delicious food. The Poultry Festival Queen's Court Scholarship Pageant is a highly-anticipated event during the three-day festival.
