Sherman County, located in the northern part of the great state of Texas, was founded in 1876 and organized in 1889. The county was named in honor of General Sidney Sherman, a prominent figure in Texas history who played a crucial role in the Texas Revolution and later served as a state senator. The county seat is Stratford, which is also the county's largest city.

Covering an area of 923 square miles, Sherman County has historically been an agricultural region, primarily focused on raising sheep and growing wheat. Throughout the years, farming and ranching have remained major economic drivers, though the discovery of oil and natural gas in the early 20th century also contributed significantly to the economic development of the county.

One fun fact about Sherman County is that it is part of the American "Dust Bowl" region. This area was heavily affected by severe dust storms in the 1930s, which led to widespread soil erosion and damage to agriculture. The Dust Bowl's environmental effects prompted significant agricultural reforms and increased awareness about the importance of soil conservation in the United States.
