Smith County is located in the eastern region of the great state of Texas, USA, and is a part of the Tyler Metropolitan Statistical Area. Established on April 11, 1846, Smith County was named after James Smith, a general during the Texas Revolution. Tyler is the county seat and the largest city in the county. With an area of 949 square miles, Smith County is the 22nd smallest county in Texas.

Prior to European settlement, the area was inhabited by the Caddo people, and Spanish explorers passed through in their search for new territory during the 18th century. In the early 19th century, settlers from the southern United States began migrating to the region, most of them bringing with them the institution of slavery.

Agriculture has always been a vital part of the local economy, with cotton being the main cash crop during the 19th and early 20th centuries. The discovery of oil in 1930 and growth of the oil industry thereafter significantly impacted the county's economic landscape. Today, the economy of Smith County is diverse, with industries such as healthcare, education, manufacturing, and retail playing essential roles.

One fun fact about Smith County is that it is home to the world-renowned Texas Rose Festival, an annual event held in Tyler since 1933, celebrating the importance of the rose-growing industry in the region. Tyler is recognized as the "Rose Capital of America" due to its extensive rose cultivation and processing facilities, and the festival draws thousands of visitors from across the globe, featuring various craft fairs, parades, and the crowning of the Rose Queen.
