Somervell County, located in the great state of Texas, is a small county with a rich history. Established in 1875, it was named after Alexander Somervell, a soldier, surveyor, and statesman who played a key role in early Texas history. The county is situated in the north-central part of Texas and spans an area of approximately 192 square miles. Its county seat, Glen Rose, is often referred to as the "Dinosaur Capital of Texas."

Prior to European settlement, the area was inhabited by various Native American tribes, including the Caddo and Tonkawa Indians. The earliest European explorer, Luis de Moscoso Alvarado, is believed to have passed through the area in 1542. During the 19th century, the region saw an influx of Anglo-American settlers due in part to the establishment of the Republic of Texas.

The development of Somervell County was fueled by the booming cotton industry in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Agriculture, cattle ranching, and limestone quarrying were also key industries during this period. The county experienced significant growth after the construction of the Paluxy River Bridge in 1892, allowing for more accessible transportation and trade.

A fun fact about Somervell County is that it is home to Dinosaur Valley State Park. The park, which opened in 1972, contains some of America's best-preserved dinosaur footprints, primarily from the Cretaceous Period. The area has been a popular destination for paleontologists and dinosaur enthusiasts alike for many years, contributing to its nickname as the "Dinosaur Capital of Texas."
