Starr County is located in the Rio Grande Valley in the southern region of the great state of Texas. It was established on February 10, 1848, and was named after James Harper Starr, Secretary of the Treasury of the Republic of Texas. The county seat is Rio Grande City. In its early days, the region was primarily inhabited by native tribes like the Coahuiltecan Indians.

Throughout its history, Starr County has been an important agricultural area, producing various crops like cotton, sugarcane, fruits, and vegetables. Cattle ranching has also been a major economic activity. The county was also affected by the Texas Mexican Railway's construction in the early 20th century, which facilitated economic growth and development.

Due to its proximity to the border, Starr County played a significant role during the Mexican-American War (1846-1848) and the American Civil War (1861-1865), as it served as a strategic point for troops and military supply lines.

A fun fact about Starr County is that it is home to the "Las Cuevas Warfare", an historic feud between settled Mexican families and incoming Anglo-American settlers which began in the mid-1800s and lasted for decades. This feud involved ranches in the county, and its bloody history of violence is reminiscent of the wild west.
