Sutton County, located in the great state of Texas, was established on April 1, 1887, and organized on February 26, 1890. It is situated in the Edwards Plateau region of West Central Texas and spans 1,454 square miles. Named after Confederate officer and Texas legislator John S. Sutton, the county was primarily formed from Crockett County.

Sonora, the county seat, was founded in 1889 when a successful well was dug near the site. The discovery of water in this region attracted settlers and soon led to the development of a thriving community. Ranching has been essential to the county's economy from its earliest days, with sheep ranching playing a significant role. Sutton County has been known as the "Wool Capital of Texas" thanks to its sheep raising industry.

In addition to ranching, Sutton County has experienced a booming oil industry since the 1920s. The discovery of large deposits in nearby areas led to significant economic growth, which continues today. In the 1960s, local deposits of uranium ore helped make the region an associated center for the nuclear energy industry.

A fun fact about Sutton County is that it is home to the Caverns of Sonora, a unique Texas treasure located just outside the city of Sonora. These caverns are among the most famous limestone cave systems in the world and are filled with beautiful, intricate crystal formations-an unforgettable site for locals and tourists alike.
