Swisher County, Texas
.Swisher County, located in the Panhandle Plains region of Texas, was named after James G. Swisher, a soldier during the Texas Revolution and signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence. Swisher County, which has its county seat as Tulia, was officially established on August 21, 1876 but was not organized until March 17, 1890. The county spans over 901 square miles.
In the late 19th century, cattle ranching was the main source of livelihood in Swisher County. After the Santa Fe Railroad arrived in the area in 1906, the county experienced a period of rapid development with the influx of settlers drawn to the newly available farmlands. An increase in agricultural activities like farming and livestock raising shaped the economy of the region. The various crops grown in Swisher County include sorghum, cotton, corn, and wheat.
One fun fact about Swisher County is that it is home to the Tulia Livestock Auction, one of the largest cattle auctions in the state of Texas. The auction which started in 1946, still takes place every Wednesday and is a significant economic activity that has become a source of pride for the region.
