Taylor County, located in the great state of Texas, was officially established on February 1, 1858, though it was not organized until July 3, 1878. Named after brothers Edward, James, and George Taylor, who were early Texas settlers and patriots, the county is situated within the north-central region of the state. The county seat is Abilene, which was founded in 1881 when the Texas and Pacific Railway was built through the area.

One of the early industries in Taylor County was cattle ranching, as it was part of Texas' legendary open range. Agriculture also played a significant role in the county's growth, with cotton being a primary crop. Additionally, petroleum production has been an essential aspect of the local economy since the 1920s, when oil was discovered in the Abilene area.

A fun fact about Taylor County is that during World War II, it served as the location for Camp Barkeley, a vast US Army training facility where over 50,000 soldiers were stationed. The massive installation, situated just south of Abilene, was one of the largest Infantry Replacement Training Centers in the United States at the time. Today, remnants of Camp Barkeley can still be found scattered around Taylor County.
