Terrell County is located in the Trans-Pecos region of southwestern Texas and is named after Alexander W. Terrell, a lawyer, judge, and Confederate diplomat. The county was officially established on April 8, 1905. Its county seat, Sanderson, originally served as a crew change and maintenance point for the Southern Pacific Railroad.

Prior to the arrival of European settlers, this region was inhabited by various Native American tribes, such as the Jumano, Mescalero, and Lipan Apache. Spanish explorers were among the first Europeans to venture through the area in the 16th century. Throughout the 1800s, the area saw occasional battles between settlers and Native Americans, as well as cattle drives and ranching.

The development and expansion of the railroad in the late 19th century played a significant role in Terrell County's growth. This led to an increase in sheep and cattle ranching, as well as the establishment of small communities. Agriculture, oil, and gas exploration, and ranching remain essential for the county's economy to date.

A fun fact about Terrell County is that it is home to Pecos River's "Paisano Pete," one of the largest roadrunner statues in the world. It is situated in the county seat, Sanderson, serving as a popular photo spot for visitors and locals alike. The roadrunner is a native bird of the arid climates of southwestern Texas, making its larger-than-life representation a fitting symbol for this region.
