Terry County, situated in the great state of Texas, was created on August 21, 1876 and organized on July 22, 1904. It is located in the southern part of the Texas Panhandle on the Llano Estacado, a large plateau. Brownfield, the county seat, is nearly 43 miles southwest of Lubbock. Terry County was named after Colonel Benjamin Franklin Terry who was the commander of the prominent Texas Confederate regiment, Terry's Texas Rangers, during the Civil War.

In the early days, Terry County was inhabited by various nomadic native tribes. Later, it became a part of Pedro Vial's road from Santa Fe to San Antonio. The county has experienced various events such as the Comanche raids, the Buffalo Soldier tragedy of 1877, and the impact of the stage lines and cattle trails. Farming and ranching have played a significant role in the economy of Terry County since its establishment.
