Throckmorton County is located in the north-central region of the great state of Texas. It was formed in 1858 from a portion of Fannin County and was named after Dr. William E. Throckmorton, an early pioneer and a prominent figure in the Texas Republic. The county seat is the town of Throckmorton, which is the county's largest community.

The area was initially inhabited by various Native American tribes, including the Wichita, Comanche, and Kiowa, among others. As settlers moved westward, they began to encroach upon the Native American territories, leading to increased conflict between the two groups. In the 1840s and 1850s, European settlers started to arrive in the area, primarily attracted by the fertile land and opportunities for ranching.

Ranching became a significant part of the local economy, and by the 1880s, Throckmorton County saw the establishment of its first large-scale ranches. The SQ Ranch and the Renderbrook Spade Ranch were two of the most prominent ranches in the region. The local economy continued to focus on agriculture and ranching throughout the 20th century, with cattle and wheat being the main products of the region.

One fun fact about Throckmorton County is that it is home to the "Living Desert Zoo," a unique zoo in the town of Throckmorton that features various desert-dwelling animals and plants from around North America. The zoo covers about 11 acres of land and provides education and conservation efforts related to desert ecosystems. This makes it an interesting and informative destination for visitors and residents alike who are interested in learning more about the diverse wildlife in this region of the USA.
