Upshur County is located in the northeastern part of the great state of Texas. It was officially established on April 27, 1846, following the annexation of Texas to the United States. The county was named in honor of Abel P. Upshur, who was the U.S. Secretary of State during the time of the Texas annexation.

The county's seat is in Gilmer, which was founded in 1848 and named after Thomas W. Gilmer, a Virginian who served as the Secretary of the Navy for a short time in the 1840s. The area was initially occupied by Native American tribes, such as the Caddo and Cherokee, before European colonization took place.

Upshur County's economy during the 1800s was primarily based on agriculture, with cotton being a major crop. The county experienced an economic boom in the early 20th century with the discovery of oil. The first successful oil well, known as the Lathrop No. 1, was drilled in 1936, leading to the emergence of industries related to oil production and refining.

During the 1930s, the county also saw an increase in its population, which peaked in the 1980s. Nevertheless, agriculture remains a significant part of the local economy, with the county maintaining its strong rural identity.

Fun fact: Upshur County is known for producing Yam Potatoes, and every October, the city of Gilmer hosts the East Texas Yamboree, a celebration of the county's rich agricultural history. The festival features a yam queen, a parade, and various exhibits showcasing the importance of yams in the region's identity.
