Upton County is located in the great state of Texas, within the southwestern part of the state. Established on February 26, 1887, Upton County was named in honor of John C. and William F. Upton, two brothers who were both Confederate Colonels during the American Civil War. The county was officially organized on January 17, 1910. Before the establishment of Upton County, the area was inhabited by Native American tribes like the Comanche and Apache.

The early settlers in Upton County were primarily ranchers attracted to the region by the ample grazing land for their livestock. The discovery of oil in 1910 at the Jabez Smith ranch, however, changed the economic landscape of the county. The Yates Oil Field, discovered in 1926, further catapulted the region into the forefront of the Texas oil industry, stimulating growth and development. As a result, the county's population grew steadily over the years.

A fun fact about Upton County, Texas: In the 1930s, the oil boom in the region was so significant that the town of McCamey became known as the "Windiest City in Texas" due to the sheer number of windmills present during that time.
