Walker County, in the great state of Texas, is located in the East Texas Timberlands region, with the small, vibrant city of Huntsville as the county seat. Established in 1846, the county is named after Robert J. Walker, a prominent US statesman who was the Secretary of the Treasury under President James K. Polk.

Initially, the region was occupied by various Native American tribes, such as the Bidai, Coushatta, and Alabama Indians. In the early 19th century, Anglo-Americans began to settle in the area, with the first settlement founded by Jared E. Groce, known as Groce's Ferry, in 1821.

The growth of Huntsville fostered development in Walker County due to its role as a center for education, transportation, and agriculture. The construction of Interstate 45 increased accessibility and connectivity, further boosting development.

Walker County played a vital role during the Texas revolution - it is home to the renowned Sam Houston, a prominent politician, and soldier who fought for Texas independence from Mexico, and subsequently served as Texas president, governor, senator, and a congressman. In honor of Houston, a 67-foot statue, "A Tribute to Courage," was built in Huntsville, making it the world's tallest statue of an American hero.

A fun fact about Walker County is that it is home to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice's headquarters and several prison units, including the Huntsville Unit, where the state's executions are carried out. The Huntsville Unit, also known as the "Walls Unit," was the first state prison built in Texas, which began construction in 1848 and opened in 1849.
