Ward County is located in the great state of Texas, within the western part of the state, and was created in 1887 from territory originally within Tom Green County. The county was named in honor of Thomas W. Ward, a prominent Texas politician who served as the Commissioner of the General Land Office of Texas and held several other important roles in the state government. The county seat, and largest city, is Monahans.

Historically, Ward County has predominantly been an agricultural and ranching community. In the late 19th century, the Texas and Pacific Railway passed through the area, which helped to drive economic growth and development. Early settlers raised livestock, especially cattle, and grew crops such as cotton and alfalfa. In addition to its agricultural heritage, Ward County is also known for its petroleum reserves, and the discovery of oil fields in the early 20th century helped further spur economic growth and diversification.

One fun fact about Ward County is that it is home to the Monahans Sandhills State Park, which features beautiful sand dunes that can reach up to 70 feet in height. The park covers approximately 3,840 acres and is a popular destination for recreational activities, such as sand surfing and sandboarding, as well as picnicking and wildlife observation.
