Wharton County is located in the southeastern part of the great state of Texas, U.S.A. It was officially created by the government of the Republic of Texas on April 3, 1846, and was named after brothers William H. and John A. Wharton, who were prominent figures in the Texas Revolution. The county seat is Wharton, the city.

Prior to European settlement, the area was inhabited by various Native American tribes, predominantly the Karankawa and Tonkawa. The first European settlers arrived in the late 1820s and 1830s, under Stephen F. Austin's Mexican land grants. The settlers initially focused on cattle ranching, while the fertile land allowed for the cultivation of cotton and the expansion of agricultural activities.

The American Civil War significantly impacted Wharton County's economy, as many men left to join the war, and the remaining population had to deal with Union blockades that disrupted trade. After the war, the area experienced a significant economic boost with the introduction of the railroad in 1881.

The 20th and 21st centuries have seen further expansion of agricultural and industrial activities in Wharton County, including rice farming, natural gas production, and nuclear power generation.

Fun Fact: Wharton County is home to the 20,000-acre Blue Creek Ranch, one of the largest cattle ranches in Texas, and historically the largest Brahman cattle operation in the county.
