Willacy County is located in the Rio Grande Valley in the southeastern part of the great state of Texas. The county was officially created in 1911, after it was separated from Cameron County and Hidalgo County. Named after State Senator John G. Willacy, the county covers an area of approximately 784 square miles.

European exploration in the region began in the early 16th century when Spanish colonizers first arrived. Indigenous peoples, including the Karankawa, Lipan Apache, and Coahuiltecans inhabited the area before European settlement. Spanish colonizers established a series of missions and presidios in the region, including Padre Island, which is located just east of Willacy County.

In the early 20th century, Willacy County began experiencing significant growth and development. The railroad industry boosted the local economy, and agriculture gained prominence, especially the farming of cotton and fruit trees. The establishment of land grants, such as the San Juan de Carricitos Land Grant and Las Norias Ranch, also contributed to the county's growth.

Today, Willacy County has a diverse population and economy that includes agriculture, manufacturing, and services. The county seat is the city of Raymondville, and other notable cities and towns include Port Mansfield, Lyford, and Sebastian.

Fun fact: Willacy County is home to the Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge, which spans over 97,000 acres and is the largest protected habitat for the endangered ocelot in the United States. This refuge is vital for the survival and conservation of many other wildlife species, including migratory birds and the threatened indigo snake.
