Carbon County, located in the central eastern part of Utah, was established on March 8, 1894, and is named after the abundant coal resources found in the region. The county covers approximately 1,485 square miles, with a population of around 21,000 residents. Price is the county seat and the largest city in the area.

Historically, the region was inhabited by the Fremont and Ute Native American tribes. European-American settlement in Carbon County began in the 1880s with the arrival of the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad, which opened up the region to commercial coal mining. The mining industry dominated the local economy for much of the 20th century, and the county became home to diverse immigrant populations, particularly from southern and eastern Europe, who were attracted by the mining jobs.

Although Carbon County has experienced economic hardships with the decline of coal production, it has made efforts to diversify with industries such as agriculture, tourism, and outdoor recreation. One of the major attractions is the area's rich prehistoric sites, including the Cleveland-Lloyd Dinosaur Quarry, part of the Jurassic National Monument, which is known for its high number of Allosaurus fossils. The Nine Mile Canyon, often referred to as the "world's longest art gallery," is another local treasure, featuring thousands of ancient petroglyphs and pictographs created by Native American peoples.

Fun Fact: Carbon County is also home to the Helper Western and Railroad Museum, which celebrates the city's heritage as a railroad hub. Helper City, founded in 1881, received its name because it was the location where "helper" engines were added to trains to help them climb the steep mountains surrounding the area.
