Duchesne County, located in the great state of Utah, has a rich historical background. The county was officially formed on January 4, 1915, from a portion of Wasatch County, but its history dates back to the presence of indigenous peoples, such as the Ute, Fremont, and Shoshone tribes.

In the late 18th and early 19th century, European explorers and fur traders came to the area, making contact with the Ute Tribe. The Dominguez-Escalante Expedition of 1776, led by Spanish Franciscan priests Francisco Atanasio Dominguez and Silvestre Velez de Escalante, was one of the first documented expeditions in the region.

In the mid-1800s, early Mormon pioneers and settlers arrived, with the first settlement in the region being established in 1879 by a group of settlers from Fairview, Utah. As more settlers arrived, the economy grew, primarily based on agriculture, livestock, and later, energy resources, such as oil and gas.

One fun fact about Duchesne County is that it is home to Starvation State Park, a popular recreation spot established in 1970. The state park, which includes Starvation Reservoir, offers various recreational activities like fishing, boating, and camping, and has become a major tourist attraction in the region. The reservoir got its unique name from the early settlers who faced harsh conditions and starvation while trying to establish a settlement in this part of the Uintah Basin.
