Emery County is located in the southeastern part of the great state of Utah. It was officially created on February 12, 1880, and was named after George W. Emery, the territorial governor of Utah at that time. The county has a rich history, spanning from prehistoric times to the present day.

One notable aspect of Emery County's history is its prehistoric past. Numerous dinosaur fossils have been discovered in the area, indicating that it was once home to an array of prehistoric creatures. The incredible Cleveland-Lloyd Dinosaur Quarry, located in the northern part of the county, contains the densest concentration of Jurassic-era dinosaur bones ever found. The quarry is one of the most significant paleontological sites in North America.

Emery County's modern history began with the settlement of European pioneers in the mid-1800s. The first permanent settlers were primarily farmers and ranchers who relied on the area's fertile soil and abundant water resources. Mormon pioneers played a significant role in the settlement of the region, and their influence can be seen throughout the county's history.

As the 20th century progressed, Emery County witnessed the development of mining and energy industries. The region contains vast coal deposits, which lead to the growth of coal mining and power-generation facilities. The mining industry remains an important part of Emery County's economy to this day.

One fun fact about Emery County is that it's home to the famous San Rafael Swell, a large geologic structure covering around 2,000 square miles. The Swell is known for its unique and stunningly beautiful sandstone formations, canyons, and rock art panels. Adventure enthusiasts, rock climbers, and photographers often visit the area to explore its natural beauty and indulge in outdoor activities.
