Iron County is located in southwestern Utah, United States. It was originally named Little Salt Lake Valley and was established on January 31, 1851. The county was later renamed in 1852 to Iron County, owing to its substantial iron ore deposits, which played a significant role in its early history and the development of the region. Iron County was formed from a portion of unorganized territory within the Utah Territory, and the county seat was first located in Parowan, which also served as the first settlement.

In the early 1850s, Mormon Church leaders, including Brigham Young, encouraged settlers' migration to the region, recognizing the need for iron for the expanding population and to support their economic endeavors. They established the Iron Mission in 1850 to exploit local iron resources. The first iron works in Iron County were located near present-day Cedar City, which was founded in 1851 as the location for these iron works.

One fun fact about Iron County is its connection to the famous Cedar Breaks National Monument. Located near Cedar City, Cedar Breaks National Monument is a natural amphitheater stretching across three miles, with a depth of over 2,000 feet, and showcases multicolored cliffs, spires, and pinnacles. The monument is well-known for its fascinating geological formations, vibrant colors, subalpine ecosystems, and stunning vistas.

Throughout Iron County's history, it has been marked by the influence of the iron industry, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and a rich natural landscape that continues to draw visitors today.
