San Juan County, located in the southeastern part of Utah, is rich in history and culture. Established in 1880, the county covers an area of approximately 7,933 square miles, making it the largest county in Utah. It was named after the San Juan River, which was named by Spanish explorers who passed through the region in 1776.

Before European settlers arrived, San Juan County was inhabited by Native American tribes, such as the Ancestral Puebloans (Anasazi) and the Navajo. The region is known for its stunning archaeological sites and well-preserved ancient cliff dwellings, particularly those found in Hovenweep National Monument and Butler Wash.

The historical Mormon pioneers led by Silas S. Smith and Platte D. Lyman established the first permanent settlement in the region known as Bluff in 1880. Their journey is famously documented as the 'Hole-in-the-Rock' expedition, where pioneers carved out a steep and narrow trail through cliffs to reach their destination.

In the early 1900s, the discovery of significant oil and natural gas deposits, along with uranium and vanadium, brought economic development to the county. Today, San Juan County is known for its picturesque landscapes, including Canyonlands National Park, Monument Valley, Natural Bridges National Monument, and Bears Ears National Monument.

Fun fact about San Juan County: The county is home to the Four Corners Monument, where Utah, Colorado, Arizona, and New Mexico meet at a single point. It's the only location in the USA where four states meet, making it a popular tourist destination.
