Wasatch County, located in the great state of Utah, was officially established in January 1850. Named for the Ute Native American word "wasatch," which means "mountain pass," the county is situated in the north-central part of the state. Its county seat is the city of Heber. Wasatch County is often referred to as the Wasatch Back and encompasses the beautiful Heber Valley and the mountains that surround it.

The region's history dates back several thousand years, with evidence that ancient Native Americans inhabited the area. In the 18th Century, the Ute tribe was the primary resident population. European settlers, predominantly Mormons led by Brigham Young, arrived in the mid-19th century and established fortresses and settlements, including Fort Heber, around 1858.

The Heber Valley became an essential transportation hub in the late 1800s due to the arrival of the railroad, which connected the region to the transcontinental rail system. This development played a significant role in spurring economic growth in Wasatch County, fostering industry and agriculture, such as dairy farming, sheep herding, and crop cultivation. The natural beauty of the region has been a significant draw for the tourism industry, with popular destinations such as Strawberry Reservoir and Deer Creek Reservoir.

Notably, in 2002, Wasatch County played a role in hosting the Winter Olympic Games, with the Soldier Hollow Nordic Center serving as the site for cross-country skiing and biathlon events.

Fun Fact: Wasatch County is home to the historic Heber Valley Railroad, also known as the Heber Creeper. Operating since 1899, this scenic recreational railway takes visitors on a vintage train ride through the picturesque Provo Canyon and Heber Valley, offering views of impressive landscapes and local wildlife.
