Alleghany County is located in the western part of the Commonwealth of Virginia. The county was established in 1822 and named after the Alleghany Mountains which run through this region. It is bounded on the north by Bath County, on the east by Rockbridge County, and on the south and west by the state of West Virginia. Covington, the county seat, was founded in 1818 and incorporated in 1833.

The area was originally inhabited by Native Americans, primarily the Shawnee tribe. After the arrival of European settlers, conflicts occurred between the natives and the settlers, eventually leading to the displacement of the native population. The region was included in the land grants given by the English Monarchs to various private companies in the early 18th century.

During the early 19th century, the region witnessed significant growth due to the arrival of the Virginia Central Railroad, which connected the region with the eastern parts of Virginia. This led to economic development in the area, primarily in agriculture, timber, and other natural resources. Tourism also played a crucial role in the county's growth, with visitors drawn by the area's beautiful landscapes, including the Jackson and Cowpasture Rivers, Falling Springs Falls, and the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests.

One fun fact about Alleghany County is that it is home to the Humpback Covered Bridge, located near the town of Covington. Built in 1857, the bridge is one of the oldest remaining covered bridges in the United States and one of the only four left in Virginia. Its unique humpback design has made it an architectural curiosity and popular tourist attraction.
