Amherst County is located in the central part of the great state of Virginia, USA. It was officially created in 1761 from portions of Albemarle County, which initially encompassed all the western lands ceded by the Native American tribes after the Treaty of Albany in 1722. The county was named in honor of Sir Jeffery Amherst, a prominent British military officer who later became the Governor of Virginia (1763-1768).

Amherst County's initial development centered around tobacco cultivation, and as the plantation economy thrived, the population grew steadily. The introduction of tobacco inspection warehouses in the 1730s at locations along the James River facilitated the growth of the tobacco trade in the region. Agriculture remained the primary economic activity in Amherst County until the 20th century when manufacturing and the service industry became important to the local economy.

During the American Revolutionary War, Amherst County was an important source of manpower and supplies for the Continental Army, and many of its citizens played vital roles in the conflict. In the Civil War, the county saw limited military action but provided soldiers to both the Confederate and Union armies.

Today, Amherst County is known for its impressive natural beauty, historic landmarks, and recreational opportunities. The Blue Ridge Parkway and the Appalachian Trail pass through the county, offering hikers spectacular views and a chance to explore the region's impressive landscapes.

Fun Fact: Sweet Briar College, a renowned women's liberal arts college, is located in Amherst County. It was founded in 1901 by Indiana Fletcher Williams in memory of her daughter, Daisy Williams, who died at a young age. The college is situated on a sprawling 3,250-acre campus and is distinguished for its beautiful campus, rigorous academics, and strong sense of community.
