Bedford County is located in the Piedmont region of the Commonwealth of Virginia, USA. It was founded in 1753 when it was created from part of Lunenburg County, and it was named in honor of John Russell, the fourth Duke of Bedford. During the American Revolutionary War, Bedford County supported the cause of independence and contributed heavily to the war effort. The county weathered numerous invasions by the British and saw battles fought on its soil.

One notable historical figure from Bedford County is Thomas Jefferson. His famous retreat, Poplar Forest, is situated in the county, which he used as a private escape from public life. Jefferson designed the octagonal house at Poplar Forest and spent many leisurely years there perfecting the architecture and landscape.

Another significant event in the county's history was the involvement of the "Bedford Boys" during World War II. The Bedford Boys refers to a group of 35 soldiers from Bedford County, of which 19 lost their lives on the first day of the Normandy Invasion (D-Day) in 1944. This small rural community suffered one of the highest per capita losses during the entire American war effort. In recognition of their sacrifice, the National D-Day Memorial was constructed in the town of Bedford and dedicated in 2001.

A fun fact about Bedford County is that it is home to the world's largest apple, which is actually a 50-foot tall fiberglass apple that was used as a prop in the 1991 movie "Big Stone Gap." It has since been preserved as a roadside attraction in the town of Thaxton, drawing visitors from far and wide.
