Botetourt County, located in the great state of Virginia, is a region with a rich historical background. Established in 1770, the county was named after the then-Governor of Virginia, Norborne Berkeley, Lord Botetourt. It was originally part of Augusta County before being split off to form a separate entity. Over the years, the size of the county has changed, with parts being taken for the creation of new counties like Rockbridge and Craig.

Botetourt County experienced significant growth during the 19th century, with major developments in agriculture, manufacturing, and trade. As the county lies in the fertile Shenandoah Valley, it was an ideal location for thriving agricultural activities. The construction of the James River and Kanawha Canal in the 1830s further boosted the growth of the economy by improving transportation and trade.

During the Civil War, Botetourt County contributed to the Confederate cause with soldiers, supplies, and resources. Post-war, the region continued to evolve, with a focus on infrastructure and industry. For example, the opening of the Great Road, which connected the eastern and western parts of the county, greatly improved mobility and trade opportunities.

Today, Botetourt County is a hub for recreation, arts, and culture while continuing to pay homage to its historical roots. The town of Fincastle, the county seat, showcases great examples of 18th-century architecture with preserved buildings and historical landmarks.

Fun Fact: Botetourt County is often referred to as the "birthplace of American fly fishing" due to its beautiful trout streams and strong angling culture. The county boasts numerous fishing opportunities for both game and non-game fish, with anglers traveling from far and wide to enjoy the sport in this picturesque region.
