Bristol County is an independent city in the Commonwealth of Virginia, located in the southeastern part of the state. It is not technically a county, although it shares its name with a county in nearby Rhode Island. The area was initially inhabited by native peoples, such as the Cherokee, but European settlement began in the 18th century.

The city of Bristol emerged around the 1760s, when local entrepreneur Evan Shelby moved to the area and built a fort along the banks of the Beaver Creek. The settlement originally took the name of Sapling Grove. In the early 19th century, the area played a crucial role in western expansion, and in 1850, Virginia chartered a railroad that connected Bristol to the rest of the East Coast. This led to rapid economic and population growth in the area.

In 1890, the city was officially incorporated as Bristol, Virginia, which was named after Bristol, England, due to similarities between the two places such as surrounding hills and access to water. Bristol straddles the border between Virginia and Tennessee, and it claims the title of "The Birthplace of Country Music" because of its role in the development of this genre.

One fun fact about Bristol County is that the State Street, the main thoroughfare in the city, runs directly along the state line between Virginia and Tennessee. This unique location allows visitors to stand with one foot in each state while exploring downtown Bristol. The city is also known for its thriving arts scene, with various galleries, theaters, and live music venues available for residents and tourists alike.
