Buchanan County, located in the great state of Virginia, was established on February 13, 1858, and is named after the 15th President of the United States, James Buchanan. In the Appalachian Plateau region of the state, the county is part of the coal-rich region that defined the late 1800s to the 1900s. The county seat and the largest town is Grundy.

Prior to European settlement in the 1700s, the region was home to Native American tribes, including the Cherokee and Shawnee. As settlers moved into the area in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, it became part of Tazewell County before forming its own county. Buchanan County experienced economic growth in the late 19th and early 20th centuries because of the coal mining industry. Coal production drastically accelerated following the construction of railway systems, primarily the Norfolk and Western Railway, which facilitated coal transportation.

One fun fact about Buchanan County is that it has been referred to as the "Ramp Capital of the World." Each spring, the region celebrates the ramp, a type of wild onion, with the annual "Ramp Festival," where locals and visitors partake in a variety of ramp-focused dishes and participate in festivities celebrating this culturally significant plant. The festival highlights the county's rich history, its connection to nature, and local traditions.
