Campbell County, located in the great state of Virginia, was founded on December 13, 1781. The county was named in honor of General William Campbell, a Revolutionary War hero famous for his victory in the Battle of Kings Mountain. It covers an area of around 507 square miles and is situated in the Piedmont region of the state, neighboring counties such as Bedford, Pittsylvania, Halifax, and more. Lynchburg City is an independent city located within the geographical boundaries of Campbell County.

The county played a role in the American Civil War, with the Battle of Staunton River Bridge occurring near its southern border. During this period, many local residents enlisted in the Confederate Army. After the war, the economy experienced growth that saw developments in agriculture and the emergence of tobacco manufacturing industries.

Historically, Campbell County has been home to numerous plantations, with many dating back to the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The Red Hill Plantation, for example, was the home of the American Founding Father and statesman, Patrick Henry. The plantation now serves as a historic site and museum.

One fun fact about Campbell County is that it is home to the Avoca Museum, a historic house museum located in the town of Altavista. The museum features various artifacts and exhibits showcasing the rich history of the county and its surrounding areas, offering visitors a glimpse into the past of this remarkable region in Virginia.
