Cumberland County is a county situated in the commonwealth of Virginia, USA. Established in 1749, the county was named after the Duke of Cumberland, William Augustus, who was the second son of King George II of England. This historical county was formed from Goochland County, a territory that was originally part of the vast Henrico Shire created in 1634.

The county seat, Cumberland, is located at a major crossroads and played a significant role during the Revolutionary War as well as the Civil War. Cumberland County is rich in history, including a special connection with Revolutionary War heroine Mary Draper Ingles, who was captured and held by Shawnee Native Americans before making her renowned escape and journey back to Virginia.

Cumberland County is characterized by its rural landscapes, historic plantations, and miles of scenic roads. It is also famous for being the birthplace of the well-known evangelist and educator, Reverend Dr. William "Billy" Sunday, who was born in Ames, Iowa, in 1862, as his parents were among the early pioneers in the county.

One fun fact about Cumberland County is that it is home to Bear Creek Lake State Park, which offers a wide range of outdoor recreational activities including camping, boating, fishing, hiking, and swimming, making it a popular destination for both residents and visitors alike.
