.Essex County, located in the great state of Virginia, has a rich historical background dating back to the early days of European settlement in the American colonies. Established in 1692, it was named after Essex County, England. Covering an area of approximately 286 square miles, Tappahannock serves as the county seat.
In the 17th century, English settlers arrived in the area and established agricultural communities, cultivating mainly tobacco as a cash crop. The Rappahannock River running through the county played a crucial role in the early economy due to the easy transportation it provided to European markets.
Essex County played a part in the Revolutionary War as well. A notable event occurred in 1774 when the residents of the county's parish collected funds to support Boston following the Boston Tea Party.
