Fredericksburg County, officially known as the City of Fredericksburg, is an independent city located in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Founded in 1728, Fredericksburg played a significant role in America's early history due to its strategic location on the Rappahannock River, halfway between the state capital of Richmond and the nation's capital, Washington, D.C.

The city was chartered by the Virginia General Assembly in 1728, and named after the then Prince of Wales, Frederick Louis. During the colonial era, Fredericksburg was a prominent port and center of commerce. The city also made important contributions to the Revolutionary War and Civil War. Mary Washington, mother of the first U.S. President George Washington, resided in Fredericksburg, and his sister lived nearby at Kenmore Plantation.

Fredericksburg was an essential site during the Civil War, where the Battle of Fredericksburg took place in December 1862. The Union Army, led by General Ambrose E. Burnside, faced the Confederate Army, led by General Robert E. Lee. The battle resulted in a major victory for the Confederates, with about 12,600 Union casualties compared to 5,300 Confederate casualties.

Today, the city is known for its historic sites, museums, restored 18th and 19th-century buildings, historic charm, and vibrant cultural scene. The Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park preserves the grounds of four major battlefields from the Civil War era. It also honors those who fought during these significant battles.

Fun fact: Fredericksburg is home to the Rising Sun Tavern, established in 1760 as the home of George Washington's younger brother, Charles Washington. It became a tavern in 1792 and still operates as a museum today, illustrating the life and times of Colonial America.
