Giles County is located in the western part of the Commonwealth of Virginia, in the United States. Established in 1806, the county was named in honor of William Branch Giles, who was a U.S. Senator from Virginia, a Representative from Virginia, and the 24th Governor of Virginia at the time. Spread over 360 square miles, Giles County is bordered by the Appalachian Mountains to the west and the New River to the east.

The founding of Giles County can be traced back to the early European settlers who came to the region in the 18th century, primarily English, Scotch-Irish, and German immigrants. Before their arrival, Native American tribes like the Cherokee and Shawnee inhabited the area.

The region soon transformed into an agricultural and mining hub, thanks to the fertile land and the numerous mineral resources. The county's economy was historically fueled by farming, timber, and coal mining industries, though in recent years, it has diversified into manufacturing and tourism.

A fun fact about Giles County is that it is home to nearly 50 miles of the captivating New River, which is one of the oldest rivers in the world, even older than the Appalachian Mountains surrounding it. Contrary to its name, the New River is believed to be among the oldest rivers on Earth, with estimates stating it to be around 320 million years old. This has made the county a popular destination for outdoor recreation, such as fishing, hiking, and canoeing, attracting both residents and tourists.
