Goochland County is a scenic, rural county located in the heart of Central Virginia in the United States. Established in 1728, it was named in honor of Sir William Gooch, the Royal Lieutenant Governor of the Virginia Colony from 1727 to 1749. The county was initially a part of Henrico Shire, which was subsequently divided into three separate counties, including Goochland County.

Goochland County played a significant role in the early history of America, with many notable events and personalities linked to the region. The county's location along the James River provided natural resources and fertile land, sparking rapid growth and development in the tobacco farming industry during the 17th and 18th centuries.

During the American Revolutionary War, Goochland County contributed to the colonial cause with the famous Jack Jouett's Midnight Ride in 1781. Jouett's ride was similar to Paul Revere's, spreading the word of advancing British forces and warning that the Virginia governor, Thomas Jefferson, was to be captured.

In the early 19th century, the County's landscape continued to shift as sections of its land were carved out to create new counties, such as Fluvanna, Louisa, and Powhatan. Today, Goochland County is known for its picturesque landscapes, historic landmarks, and rich cultural heritage.

A fun fact about Goochland County is that it is home to the only two-level stone bridge in the state of Virginia, the Tuckahoe Creek Bridge. The bridge was designed by Edwin Wilson and Isaac Parsons to accommodate both the James River & Kanawha Canal on the lower level and the Louisa Railroad on the upper level. It was completed in 1850, and parts of the original structure still stand today.
