Grayson County is located in the southwestern part of the Commonwealth of Virginia. Established in 1793, the county was named in honor of William Grayson, an influential Virginian lawyer, statesman, and delegate to the Constitutional Convention. The county seat is the town of Independence, which was established in 1850.

Grayson County's natural beauty is complemented by its rich history, cultural traditions, and a strong sense of community. The area was initially inhabited by indigenous peoples, including the Cherokee and Shawnee tribes. European settlers began to arrive in the 18th century, with many coming from England, Ireland, Germany, and Scotland.

The county played a role during the American Civil War, with its residents having divided loyalties between the Union and the Confederacy. This division led to a complex local history marked by skirmishes, guerilla warfare, and families torn apart by conflicting allegiances. After the war, Grayson County's economy relied primarily on agriculture and natural resource extraction, including timber and mining. Today, the county experiences continued development and growth while preserving its rich historical and cultural heritage.

A fun fact about Grayson County is its connection to the iconic bluegrass music genre. The region is known for hosting the annual Old Fiddlers' Convention, which was originally held in nearby Fries and has since moved to the town of Galax. Since the event's inception in 1935, it draws thousands of musicians and fans from around the world to celebrate, preserve, and foster the tradition of old-time and bluegrass music in the Appalachian region.
