Henry County is located in the south-central region of the Commonwealth of Virginia. Established in 1777, Henry County was formed from Pittsylvania County, which in turn was part of the then-Halifax County. The county was named in honor of Patrick Henry, a famous American patriot, and one of the founding fathers of the United States. He was best known for his iconic 1775 speech, "Give me liberty, or give me death!", which was made to promote his support of the American Revolution.

The county seat of Henry County is the independent city of Martinsville. Over the years, the area has seen economic development stemming from industries such as textiles, tobacco, and furniture. During the 1800s, Henry County was one of the leading tobacco-producing regions in the state. In the 20th century, the county transitioned to manufacturing and transportation industries.

One fun fact about Henry County is its deep connection to NASCAR racing. The county is home to the iconic Martinsville Speedway, which is the shortest and oldest continually operating track in the NASCAR Cup Series. The speedway opened in 1947 and is known for its unique paperclip-shaped track, providing an exciting and challenging race experience for both drivers and spectators.
