Highland County, located in the great state of Virginia, is known as "Virginia's Switzerland" due to its resemblance to the Swiss Alps. It was founded on March 19, 1847, and created from portions of Bath and Pendleton counties. The county is part of the Allegheny Mountains, which contributes to its high average elevation of over 2,800 feet. Most of the county falls within the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests.

Settlers initially arrived in the region in the 1700s, and most of them came from Germany, Scotland, and Ireland. William Beverley, a wealthy landowner, was one of the first to establish land grants in the area, and his influence helped to attract other settlers in search of work and new opportunities.

The economy in Highland County has always been largely rooted in agriculture, thanks to the vast, fertile lands it offers. Today, it is especially known for its production of maple syrup, earning Highland County the moniker "The Sweetest Little Town on Earth." Every year, the county celebrates the Highland County Maple Festival, which has been an annual event since 1958. This event attracts thousands of visitors and showcases local maple syrup production, crafts, food, and entertainment.

A fun fact about Highland County is that it boasts the lowest population density of any county in Virginia. This results in a rural, tightly knit community that cherishes its secluded and scenic landscape. The county is also home to various recreational opportunities, including fishing, hunting, and hiking, attracting outdoor enthusiasts from around the nation.
