Isle of Wight County, located in the southeastern portion of Virginia, is steeped in rich history. Established in 1634 as one of the eight original shires in the English colony of Virginia, the county was originally known as Warrosquyoake Shire. It was later renamed Isle of Wight in 1637, in honor of the Isle of Wight in England from where many of the early colonists hailed.

The history of the county began with its Native American inhabitants, particularly the Warraskoyack tribe, who were gradually displaced by English settlers forming plantations and farms in the area. Isle of Wight witnessed considerable growth and development in the 17th and 18th centuries, largely driven by the cultivation of tobacco as a cash crop.

During the American Revolutionary War, the county became the site of several notable events, including the skirmish in 1779 between American forces, led by General Benjamin Lincoln, and British forces under the command of Lord Dunmore. The Battle of Smithfield occurred in January 1864 during the American Civil War, a battle that involved 4,000 Union and Confederate soldiers clashing in the streets of Smithfield, now known as the Historic District.

One fun fact about Isle of Wight County is that it is home to the oldest surviving brick church in the United States - the St. Luke's Church, also known as the Old Brick Church, which dates back to the 17th century (circa 1632). This historic church is now a museum showcasing the history and architectures of the colonial era.
