King George County is located in the northeastern part of the Commonwealth of Virginia. It was established in 1720 when it was officially split from Richmond County. The county was named in honor of King George I of Great Britain.

King George County played an important role in the history of the United States. Many influential American figures were born or lived in the county, including President James Madison, the fourth president of the United States, who was born there in 1751.

The county saw significant military engagements during the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, and the Civil War. It was the site of the Battle of Caledon during the Revolutionary War and several skirmishes during the Civil War.

Agriculture has always been a vital part of King George County's economy, with tobacco being a major cash crop during the 18th and 19th centuries. The area was also known for its ferry business, including one run by George Washington's family that connected King George County with the nearby Maryland shore.

In the 20th century, the county increasingly experienced growth, with the opening of the Dahlgren Naval Base in 1937 being a significant factor in its economic development. Today, the county population is around 26,000 people, with a mix of rural and suburban communities.

Fun fact: King George County is home to a unique landmark, known as the "Broken-Backed Worm Fences." These fences were created during the 18th century as a functional yet temporary solution for fence construction, utilizing zig-zag patterns and wooden rails without the need for nails or supporting posts.
