King William County, located in the great state of Virginia, was officially formed in 1702 from a part of King and Queen County. The county was named in honor of King William III of England. Situated in the eastern part of the state, the county lies on the Middle Peninsula and covers approximately 286 square miles.

The area was initially inhabited by the Pamunkey and Mattaponi Native American tribes, whose reservations still exist in the county today. English settlers began to arrive in the 17th century, and the county's economy was primarily based on agriculture, particularly tobacco cultivation.

During the American Revolution, many residents of King William County supported the struggle for independence from Britain. The Revolutionary War hero, General George Washington, had a cousin named Augustine Washington who lived in the county. King William Courthouse, built in 1725, is one of the oldest and well-preserved courthouses in the United States and stands as a testament to the county's rich history.

One fun fact about King William County is that it is home to the oldest continuous ferry service in the United States - the Merry Point Ferry (established in 1698). This free ferry operates across the Corrotoman River, connecting Lancaster County and Middlesex County.
